(Papaw).--An enzyme similar to pepsin, but acting in alkaline, acid, or neutral solut.--Whitish, hygroscopic powd.--SOL. in water, glycerin.--USES: For dissolving false membrane, and for aiding digestion.--~Dose:~ 2--5 grn.--EXTERN. in 5% solut. equal parts glycerin and water, for diphtheria and croup.--CAUTION: Not to be confounded with the vastly weaker preparations from papaw, known by various names.
