Nicotine: cautiously administered relieves the spasm; best given by r.e.c.t.u.m or hypodermically; by the mouth it causes spasm which may suffocate.
Nitrite of Amyl: in some cases it cures.
Nitroglycerin: like the preceding.
Opium: alone or with chloral hydrate.
Paraldehyde.
Physostigma: the liquid extract pushed to the full. Given by the mouth, or r.e.c.t.u.m, or hypodermically.

Quinine: in both idiopathic and traumatic teta.n.u.s.
Strychnine: the evidence, which is doubtful, seems to show that it is beneficial in chronic and idiopathic teta.n.u.s: should be given only in a full medicinal dose.

Cimicifuga: in combination with opium and syrup of tolu in acute catarrh.

Ferri Perchloridum: gargle in relaxed sore throat.
